In treatment of sickle cell anemia patients the goal is to control the symptoms, and to limit the number of crises. SCD patients need ongoing treatment, even when there not having painful crises. Patients should always seek care from a doctor that happens to specialize in blood disorders (hematologist).
Bone marrow transplant offers the only potential cure for sickle cell anemia. Finding a donor is the most difficult procedure that has serious risks associated with it. It could even indicate death in the process. Blood transfusions are given to try and prevent worsening anemia or even preventing strokes from happening.
