The difference between Sickle cell anemia and Sickle cell trait is that Sickle cell disease is a disease while Sickle cell trait is an abnormality in the genes. Sickle cell anemia occurring in patients that has an abnormality in the hemoglobin genes. People with sickle cell trait have enough normal hemoglobin in their red blood cells to prevent the cells from sickling. Sickle cell trait only occurs when a person happens to get a gene hemoglobin A from one parent and a gene forhemoglobin S from the other parent. Having enough hemoglobin A for the red blood cell to function normally without any problems. They also usually do not develop sickle cell disease, except in unusual circumstances they just become a carrier. However, people with sickle cell trait can genetically pass the trait to their children. If two people with sickle cell trait have children together. For instance, only one in every four child will be a carrier of Sickle cell anemia if both parents have the trait.
Scientist found in about 1 out of 400 African Americans in this today is living with SCD and about 1 out 14 are living with the trait in all different
parts of the country.

Babies are most likely to start off with one of these three different types because there bodies aren't fully developed yet so it attacks them more than adults. It is more rarely for a person with any of these types to have it starting to affect them in there adulthood.
- Hemoglobin SS
- Hemoglobin SC is the part of the red blood all that carries oxygen. The stiff red blood cells in hemoglobin SC disease can up blood vessels.
- Hemoglobin sickle beta-thalassemia (a form of "Cooley's" anemia) is a mild form of sickle cell disease. In result the cell is small in size more pale than usual, appearing to banana shaped.
